The company that makes these has been making them for over 50 years. The company originally made traditional mosquito nets & would make dish cloths from the scraps/ offcuts, but the cloths themselves became so popular they now make them as a core item.
This dish cloth (or face cloth) makes use of the strength of cotton, with the softness of rayon, which they have developed to have a good ability to remove dirt. The more you use it, the softer it becomes, and the more comfortable it feels to the touch.
The rayon material is made from wood pulp and is a recycled fibre that is biodegradable and returns to nature. It has better moisture absorption and release properties than cotton or linen, and is less likely to retain odours, making it ideal for cloths.
30 x 35cm
50% cotton/ 50% rayon
The cloths are finished with starch paste from Satsuma sweet potatoes produced in Kagoshima. Wash off the paste/ starch thoroughly with hot water before use.
Care: Warm machine wash & line dry. Both chlorine and oxygen bleaches can be used. Do not tumble dry.
About the company:
'Our family has been manufacturing mosquito net fabric in Nara for many years.
My grandmother, the previous generation, tried to make effective use of scraps of fabric that were produced when cutting mosquito net fabric by folding the fabric over and over to make dishcloths for her own use. These were very useful, so she gave them to friends and acquaintances, who were very well received and gave us many happy comments. So, in order to make them available to more people, we started manufacturing them in a set size, and that's how the "Shiroyuki Dishcloth" was born.'
