Welcome to Klay
Klay is a homeware label based in Auckland, New Zealand. Many of our items are made by our little team in our Eden Terrace workroom, ensuring quality and care in every piece.
In addition to our own creations, we also offer a curated selection of homeware products that we trust and recommend—items that meet our high standards for both design and durability.

If you follow us on Instagram, you may have noticed that I recently had a baby. It feels a little cliché to now start selling baby items, but in many ways it feels like a natural addition to our Klay offering. Everything we source and make is something we genuinely use ourselves.

So we are happy to be...
...introducing our new CHILDREN's collection of Made & Collected items <3
Bibs, Booties, Socks, Blankets, Books, Mobiles, Jackets and more in this newly added collection of our website here.
I have enjoyed discovering how many well designed baby and children's products are out there. While much of what our baby wears is second-hand, there are some things I've found worth investing in. The things that get used every day tend to be the ones that are made well from good quality natural materials, wash well and are properly designed to simply work better.

One of our favourite gifts we received when our baby was born was a wool fleece jacket that a friend in the UK sent us. It is SO soft, warm and practical. We love putting our baby in it for our daily little walks. I was so impressed with it that I tracked down the maker in Germany and ordered them in to sell!

We have these jackets in sizes 0-3 months right up to 3-4 years. They are generously sized too, so they are good for layering over other things and they will last well through growth spurts too. Some of the colours have been discontinued now, so they didn't have them in all sizes. I ordered all the sizes I could.
Early on I quickly learned the difference a good bib makes. Our baby spits up a lot, and after going through some useless bibs, we realised we needed to make our own so we started developing one just for my baby, not thinking we would sell them! As we were working on samples for it my friend Harry told me about bibs that she has used for her two babies that are made locally by a woman called Susie who runs a tiny business with her daughter called Little Acorn. They make really great bibs from lovely liberty prints! So I ordered some for my baby and again, was so impressed with how well they worked that I contacted Susie asking to be a stockist. We have 35 options of their Liberty Bibs online now!

When working on the bibs for my baby, we needed something that was actually absorbent, so that it didn't soak through right away (like other bibs I tried did), so we developed our own using our signature unbleached cotton calico and thick cotton terry towelling backing and we finished them with binding in 10 colour options. They are so nicely made. Kirsty has made this first batch herself! She takes so much care when she makes things. These fit new born up to about 3 years old. So it is something that will get a lot of use over the years. I say it is worth the investment of getting something that works well and looks pretty too since you will have to look at it so much.

We have also made some special bibs produced in a limited edition of 100 pieces. Created to mark the Year of the Fire Horse, this edition is made for babies born between February 17th 2026 and February 5th 2027, the period associated with the Fire Horse in the Chinese zodiac.

And if there is one item I would recommend to almost every new parent, it's this black and white mobile. Babies seem completely captivated by them. Ours happily stares at hers for half an hour, which any parent of a very young baby will know is quite impressive...and helpful so you can do a few things while they are occupied.

LOTS of good socks and booties to choose from in great colours.

All of the new (and existing) childrens/ babies items can be found here

Lots of fun new things from Japan, like this Onigiri Mould. I have the same at home which we have been using for a few years.

Bruno Munari's Childrens Books
We have a selection of classic children’s books by Italian designer and artist Bruno Munari. These are books I first came across years ago through a friend’s shop that has since closed (Best Wishes), and later rediscovered in Japan while reading well-worn original copies in a friend’s home. Seeing how beautifully they age only reinforced what true classics they are.
We’re stocking the titles from Munari’s historic Books of ’45 series, created after the birth of his son, Alberto. The books use die-cuts, holes, windows and bold, elegant graphics to invite children into a quiet game of looking, discovering and imagining.
First published in 1945, the series celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2025 and remains remarkably original. Many of the ideas came from everyday games and rituals Munari shared with his son, later translated into books made for all children.
See all the books here.

Our newest (and oldest) Klay Homewares item
We first made a series of these about 15 years ago and we have a new collection of them ready now
Introducing our latest homeware textile item: Round Throws. Handmade from narrow strips of 100% hemp, unfilled and lightweight, they drape and gather naturally, emphasising texture, tactility, and movement. Each limited-edition piece is an heirloom item, carefully construction and informed by textile art and historical references. You can read more about the process of making these, references and how we designed them to be used on this new blog post here.

Made from Kyoto grown cedar
Serving trays hand made in Kyoto by woodworker Washitaka Mori
I was very happy when Mori-san agreed to let us sell his trays. He doesn't really do wholesale and we are his only stockist outside of Japan! He doesn't really sell them in shops in Japan either. We are lucky to have these.
I have been spending a lot of time in and around the bed after having my baby. I am eating most meals and snacks in bed so my tray has been getting a lot of use. I find it handy that it is not too big, so I can push it away next to piles of things to be dealt with later.

We first saw these special trays at our friend Yu's pickle shop in Kyoto (you can read more about this pickle shop on our Kyoto Tips Blog Post). I loved seeing them worn in, used everyday. A very beautiful handmade item getting so much use. The woodworker, Mori-san, that made them also made the furniture and display stand in her shop. We ended up randomly meeting Mori-san's wife on a bus in Kyoto and got chatting, she told us about her husbands work and invited us over to their studio. It was only when we got there we realised it was the same woodworker that made the special pieces in Yu's shop! Kyoto feels small sometimes :)

Stainless Steel Shelves
I recently had a baby :) and our bedroom has had small reshuffles to suit the postpartum period. With the addition of a cot we swapped out a bulky, lower bedside table for one of our Stainless Shelves attached to the wall directly, and it has been so practical.
We put it up at a comfortable height for me to reach easily without moving too much. It keeps all the rotation of water, snacks, medications, balms, a light, and the on-going little piles of dishes. Very helpful while I recover from surgery and care for a newborn. For now it is safely positioned for this Golden Month stage, and can easily be moved or adjusted as our needs change.

Rose Bakery Cookbooks
I’ve had my copy of Rose Bakery’s classic cookbook Breakfast, Lunch, Tea for around 16 or 17 years (it was first published nearly 20 years ago). I bought it from Dover Street Market when I lived in London. I never made it to the original Paris bakery, but loved visiting Rose Bakery on the top floor of DSM. It was always very inspiring and refreshing. Over the years I’ve cooked/ baked a lot from it, and my copy is now well-worn, faded, flour stained. I still enjoy using it after all these years.
I like how so many of the recipes are classics, but a bit more punchy in spices and sugar is toned down. I also really like the photography and graphic design. I have looked through and read it a lot over the years, it’s a genuinely inspiring book to refer to.
I am excited to be stocking their recently released cookbook With Children. Written from Rose’s perspective of cooking with her grandchildren, it’s a beautiful book. You don’t need children to enjoy it, the food looks just as good for adults.

We have a lot of new + restocked architecture/ design books and cookbooks. You can see our full book range here and to the right are some of the titles we just got in.
Klay Gift Vouchers
We sell both physical and digital gift vouchers <3 our physical ones were designed by Chloe Larkin, who designed our website. The compostable glassine envelopes were sewn by Kirsty using 100% cotton thread. We wrap each gift voucher in Japanese gift wrap that I brought back from Kyoto.
The digital vouchers can be emailed to you or the person you are gifting one to – just enter either your or their email address at checkout.

I (Hannah) have recently been in Kyoto again for the summer. I have been updating our Kyoto Tips Blog Post with a few new places and will continue to do so if I find new things that I would recommend. We also have blog posts of Tokyo Tips and Pottery Towns Tips. Check them all out on our Blog.

When we get deliveries we separate bubble wrap, paper, card, newspaper, tissue and packing peanuts and put these into different boxes and bags in our storage room, ready to be re-used for sending out your orders. Pottery Towns We Visited in Japan
New blog post
Over the past three summers in Japan, we took several small trips from our base in Kyoto, many of which were to pottery towns.
In this blog post, I’m focusing on sharing our visits to those Pottery Towns.

The trips to Pottery Towns were clustered in with other things we wanted to see too, so I included info about all the things we did on the same trips. I have left off things that we saw that I would not recommend. We always take the time to refine our travel suggestions. This isn’t just a list of everywhere we happened to go—it’s a carefully edited selection based on our own research and first-hand experience, or suggestions from local Japanese friends. We see far more than what ends up on these tips blog posts, but only the places we truly rate make it onto our recommendations.

Checkout the blog post about the pottery towns we visited here (including other things we saw on the way).

Blog post about the things we use in our studio kitchen.
Most of the items in our studio kitchen are things we also sell. We import items from around the world that we personally use everyday and recommend, so I thought I would show our most commonly used items and tell you about some of the other things we don't sell too, but do get asked about from time to time :) such as my favourite red rice cooker, our vintage braun coffee filter, changing our cupboard doors, where to get fizzy water gas bottle refills that are NOT soda stream (BDS!) and where to get the best S hooks. Read the blog post here.

Our aprons are in stock
The natural canvas is a thick cotton. It has a good structure and has a lovely natural matte finish with husks speckled through it. I have one at home I have been using for a couple of years and it has worn well, and the stains wash out pretty well! I have a few on rotation. I use them everyday.
We also use the creamy canvas ones in the workshop when we are doing messy fluffy work with wool etc. Keeps our clothes clean.
We have lots of handy kitchen/ cooking things in stock at the moment, like the Fog Linen Tea Towels, Michael Marriott's amazing folding (cook)Bookstands, Utensil Stands, a beautiful Baking Cookbook & I very often use the Little Pocket Measuring Tape when cooking/ baking. See our full Kitchen range here.

Special House Socks from Italy
One of my favourite recent items are these really beautiful and SUPER SOFT house socks by Namok. These are made in Italy by a small, family-run factory. These socks are soft, warm, and breathable—ideal for wearing at home with slippers, to bed, or while working from home during these cold days and nights. Made from a blend of organic cotton and cashmere. These are really comfortable and warm and are not too heavy or bulky. I think these make a thoughtful gift too.

The Sori Yanagi Appreciation Society Book
We've been collecting Sori Yanagi things for years. They're prized possessions. We have his ceramic bowls, steel bowls, cutlery, strainer set, strainer, ladle, pots and pans, butter beater, whisk, serving plates, ice cream spoons, kettle and more. The next items I want to get are the tape dispenser & wine glasses from the Yanagi Design Store in Tokyo (recommend if you're in Tokyo - more info on our Tokyo Tips Blog Post here!)
I love using well designed things. I really do appreciate the great work of Sori Yanagi-san. We don't sell any Sori Yanagi products (they are available in quite a few other stores already!), but I am really happy to now be stocking this excellent new book by the Sori Yanagi Appreciation Society <3 It is the first book dedicated to Sori Yanagi to be published outside of Japan.

Check out the blog post of my Tokyo Tips! I hope this is the start of something I can edit/ update as we keep visiting Tokyo. I have been to Tokyo a few times, but only spent a few weeks there, so my tips are not as comprehensive as the Kyoto Tips. The Tokyo Tips are based on personal research & things that Japanese friends that lived in Tokyo suggested.

The bright blue thick linen tea towels and the brown tea towels are back in stock. I took some camping over summer. They are so absorbent and fast to dry.

We have a blog post called about our cushions to give more info about how Kirsty first got into making these 15 years ago, why the inners are special and what the differences are between the shapes (aside from the obvious... shapes!), and I have tried to explain about why once we sell out of certain colours we can't make more. Read the cushion blog post here.

Purple things I saw in Japan that reminded me of our Purple Cushions
I saw purple a lot in Japan. Of course in temples, but also in modernist architecture, train stations & on trains, as carpet, noren curtains and grapes. I have made a blog post of about some of the purple things I saw in Japan that reminded me of our Iris Purple Cushions.
