Yutanpo Japanese Hot Water Bottle
Traditional Japanese Galvanised Steel Hot Water Bottle.
We brought one of these back from Japan last year and used it all winter to keep warm in our cold house! We love ours and find it retains the heat throughout the night so well, still warm in the morning. It feels like a heater in the bed, solid warmth.
We prepare it about 1 hour before getting into bed. We heat ours directly on the stove top, with the cap OFF (but you can boil water in your kettle and fill it) and use oven mittens to remove it, wrap in a towel or blanket and put into your bed to heat up between the sheets. Use it in a similar way that to the rubber hotties we are familiar with in New Zealand. We find our Japanese Steel Hot Water Bottle is often still warm in the morning.
These were developed in China around the 7th century, and were introduced to Japan around the 14th century.
Materials:
Body: Galvanised Steel, Base: Brass, iron wire, stainless steel, synthetic rubber. Funnel: Polyethylene.
Size: 33cm long x 24cm wide x 8cm high. Capacity 3.4L.
We send these with a translated instruction manual. On that manual it says that you should replace these after 1 year. We have personally had ours that we have been using a lot for over a year and it is fine. Rubber hot water bottles I have had (even high quality ones) also come with a 1 year replacement note, but same with the rubber ones I find they last much longer than that.
These Yutanpo's come with a spare rubber seal too if yours wears out.
