Balkrishna Doshi: Writings on Architecture & Identity

Balkrishna Doshi was one of the most significant figures in modern Indian architecture, renowned for his human-centred approach and profound cultural sensitivity. A key collaborator of Le Corbusier during the formative years of Chandigarh and Ahmedabad, Doshi developed a deeply contextual architectural practice that bridged modernist ideals with the lived realities of Indian society. Beyond his celebrated built work, he was widely respected for his writings, lectures, and teaching, which have had a lasting influence on architectural discourse globally. His contributions were recognised with the Pritzker Architecture Prize (the highest global award in architecture) in 2018, honouring both his design legacy and his role as a thinker and educator.

This book presents a curated selection of Balkrishna Doshi’s exceptional writings since the 1950s, with some published here for the first time. The collection of 15 lectures, articles and essays is richly illustrated with more than 50 of Doshi’s personal hand-drawn sketches.
