About our Hemp Shower Curtains
We have just finished making a big batch of these 100% hemp shower curtains. We have been making these for a few years now. We generally make a batch once a year. This blog post is meant to help answer some common questions I get and provide more information about our hemp shower curtains. Below is info on the fabric, the sizes we offer, and why we’ve chosen warm colour tones. There is also a link to our care page to help you look after your curtain. Hopefully, this will give you a clearer idea about hemp shower curtains and whether they might be a good fit for your home.
We wanted to create a shower curtain that wasn’t made from plastic. Since it’s something used every day and exposed to heat and moisture, we wanted to avoid breathing in plastic toxins while we shower and avoid microplastics going to the ocean. From our experience when in product development, testing these for over a year, across four bathrooms we believe that you do not need a plastic liner with them. The hemp curtain gets wet, however when the water comes in contact with it, the water just clings to the fabric and falls down.
In fact, from my understanding, it may be better not to use a plastic liner as it allows the natural fabric to breathe and dry between uses, reducing the chance of mould growing.
The fabric is a great weight that is heavy enough to hold a good drape and not billow around (like thin plastic ones!), but light enough to dry between uses. Pure hemp has a beautiful texture to it that looks a bit like linen and is a bit translucent when held up to the light.
The light shines through the fabric creating a soft warm glowing light, which is a beautiful experience when you are inside.
We believe bathrooms—especially here in New Zealand—should feel warm and comfortable, which is why we only offer shower curtains in warm colours. We intentionally avoid blues and greens, as we find those colours can make bathroom spaces feel cold. We love how our curtains create a soft, warm, glowing light that adds a cosy touch to the room.
100% Hemp fabric makes a great shower curtain as it is naturally antibacterial & antimicrobial. From what I have read, pure hemp is less likely to grow mould than any other natural fabric.
This beautiful quality hemp we have sourced is grown and produced organically. It is of course biodegradable too and you won't be breathing in microplastics when you shower.
Quite a few people have told us they use their hemp curtain as a room divider <3 they look so pretty used like this too.

Our hemp shower curtains come in four standard size options, to suit a variety of shower/ bath situations. We have two width options, and two length options. The 1.2m wide option can be used in a shower cubicle, like above, but it can also work well over a bath or other shower situation. I used a 1.2m wide myself for a while over a bath/ shower and in that shower location I found 1.2m was wide enough.

These come in compostable packaging that we make. The bags are made from paper and we use 100% cotton thread.
We made the stamps too :)
We send the curtains out with a care booklet. These curtains are made from a natural material, so it is important to look after them and wash them regularly.

These are carefully handmade in our Auckland workshop. Because of their extra-wide size, each piece must be individually cut and sewn, making the process quite labour-intensive. As a result, we’re only able to produce one batch each year. Kirsty sews each one with great care, and we take extra steps to ensure they’re cut on grain so they hang neatly.

We make these for people like ourselves—looking for ways to avoid plastic where we can, especially in everyday items. We know they’re an investment, but they’re something you see and use multiple times a day, and we’ve done our best to make them as thoughtful and functional as possible.
