Round Throw

Kirsty made a small series of these throws around fifteen years ago. We have wanted to return to them for a long time, but making them is very time consuming. This latest series was completed over a few months by four makers, working in stages as time allowed. Each throw is composed from strips of patched 100% hemp, assembled to create a soft, flexible textile with a sense of movement. These sit lightly in a space, draping over a bed, sofa or chair, and their character changing subtly through use.

The construction involves many individual processes (which you can read about here). The absence of inner fill allows the construction to be felt through the two layers and if held up you can see the patterns from behind, giving the finished piece its light, fluid quality. The scale of these, and the time required to make each piece, limits how many can be produced. The series was inspired by Louise Bourgeois’ textile works, alongside references of old parachutes and handmade paper umbrellas. Objects that balance delicacy and structure. Further detail on the process and influences can be found on this blog post here.
